I NEVER THOUGHT THAT GHOST HAS POWERS. I THOUGHT THAT BECAUSE GHOST ARE DEAD. THEY WOULD HAVE NO POWERS. WHY WOULD CRYSTAL KILL HERSELF? SHE HAD A GREAT LIFE. I WOULDN'T KILL MYSELF!
For me i think the book after life is really good and interesting ; becuase it tell us what would happen after you die . But well i dont know what would really happen becuase this is just a story so i have no idea if it a real story or not . but for me i think it would be different after people die . well what i just read is that he meet this girl that just die but i heard no idea how so im still wondering ; but still i was wondering why he wanted her to like him for ? is it that she pretty and that he was interested in her ? but i can never really know becuase it his mind/thinking not mine . so i dont know the truth . but if i were chuy i would try to get to know her more lastly does he ever think about going to his family house to see how he doing about his death ; like if i were him i would try to know alot of thing about everything after he die .

i agree with lauds that the afterlife is very emotional. The story really stress how a outsider or ghost views on the living.i just got to the part where chuy meets crystal and tutors her on how to adapt to be a ghost. if i were a ghost i would feel alone unless a another ghost comes along. But besides that i would feel like i was in the background watching wha my friends do without me. it must be hard to be a ghost.

when i first started reading this book i thought.......wow just because of some stupid shoes ..a innocent boy got killed..pluss he was on his way to a dance with the girl of his dreams! what really shocked me was when he stood right in front of him and just washed his hands ..thats shows low respect for him self and him parents i think he {chuy should have gotten pay back and haunted himk for the rest of his life!!! he deserved it

This book reminds me of a book i read before. it was called the silent. the book was about a boy who had to live away from people because he has a deadly diesease. So these are my thoughts on the afterlife.

ReplyDeleteI think that the killer should wear different shoes because that yellow can leave skid marks on the floor so I would just wear some white or blACK sneakers so nobody can identify my sneakers with these skid marks left behind. I also think that this book is weird because when he got stabbed he said it looks like his bladder broke and its wet so he feels embaressed even though nobody sees him. This book is also a good book because I think that when he got stabbed theres no more pain because he is dead invisible cant do nothing but watch things happen. This book is also a great book because it told how he died and it didnt start off saying that somebody just comes out of nowhere and says he or his name has died dont we want to know how he died, yes we do so i think this book is good. He also says what are others doing while he is watching them with his own ghost. Thats what I think about this book, The Afterlife.

I really think that way because when he was in the bathroom just about to die I didnt really think it was going to be that quickly and it was the best part in that chapter. And, also when he died it was like a big suprise to his family and his probaly to his school. Because it sounded like he was a popular kid and was always the FRESH looking on and then on the big day of the prom he gets killed by annonymous killer! When his uncle said that when he is going to use his uncles car he better not put a dent in it or he will kill him. But, firsh of all, his uncle who is only seven years younger than him wouldnt be at a prom!And second of all, Chuy didnt even dent his uncles car!But the question is...... who killed Chuy and why did they do it?????!!!

ReplyDeleteI agree with Jovani because people will notice him because of his yellow shoes.I wouldn't wear the same shoes every day, if i was him. they would easily notice me anywhere i go. Even chuy noticed him in the bus. i also agree that chuys new freind got revenge for chuy. i think he did that because chuy was his only freind that he ever had in his whole life. i feel really sad for him, but im happy he got revenge.
ReplyDeleteI think that this book is an excellent way of telling your opinion! Gary soto the athour might think that is what's going to happen durnin g the afterlife! Different people might have different beliefs but even if they do I garentee they will love this book!! It is an adventurous book because he is dead but he is exploring the town life he never has before. The weird thing is that he is dead and he said he wasn't mad. I thought that he had problems for a second but then I thought maybe i wouldn't be either because it could give me a chance to elxplore the things I haven't!! I hate the fact that he was disappearing and then he met Crystal wow I thought what kind of twisted book is this espically because she killed her self and she had a great life like Lauds said and i agree with him who would kill themself but like i said at the beggining this book is ELXECLLENT!!

This book kinda reminds me of the Giver when Jonas is the only person that can see the color red, well Chuy in the only one hat can see Crystle. But im still mad that Chuy he dont want to get revinge on his killer I no I would. But is kissin all that Chuy and Crystle did or what else did they do i wanna find out? :p

But if I were (Chuy) I would really gonna do something bad to that yellow shoe dude becuase you killing a person life while he was trying to go to that dance with the girl of his dream, but no point now becuase, Chuy is dead . No more hope for him :'( but I was wondering did he really care about that yellow shoe dude wasting his life like that ? but i would beucase i wanna live my life and have a great future, but from what i see about Chuy; he has no future becuase he long gone . ReplyDeleteI really agree with Mark, it is a really great book. The Afterlife is NOT a scary or too emotional book at all. As you already know it is about a boy who lives in Presno,California and when he died he was going out with his girlfriend Crystle he was stabbed in the bathroom and when someone is stabbed by another person in a bathroom it is just too much and a REAL REAL evil person with alot of hate in their heart would do such a thing. LIKE, come on now!!! You all should be ashmamed of you'r selfs!! <:(

Chuy killed Chuy wow that's so stupid chuy with but the yellow shoes didn't even know they had the same name. Being nosy the other Chuy found out that they had the same name!! Well i guess in Mexico that name is very popular! Not to me!! I don't even know how to pronounce the name corectlly. Does anybody? Its probaly hard to i bet. Like judy said he died when he was trying to get with the girl of his dream just sad what violence can do to kids!! right judy!! What happen to yellow shoes Chuy's parents?? ReplyDeleteI am on page 111 where Cyrstal is visiting her boyfriend. Chuy suspects that the reason Cyrstal killed herself was over him or some other boy. Chuy really loves Cyrstal and can really connect to how she feels, after all they are both ghost. I think there is more than what cyrstal is telling about why she killed himself. Because if it was because of Eric only Cyrstal would not have been so uncomfortable when he called. I think it is because of another boy or another boyfriend. It is very suspicious. It might have been that Cyrstal couldn't choose between them and they both wanted to be with her. So she killed herself to she didn't have to make the dicision. Why would she do that. It couldn't have been that bad to take her life? Could it?

Chuy I think was a clever person because when he was little it said that he wanted to fly and now later in the future chuy has dien and living what he wants right now. Because ghost can float or fly and now hes flying.

Chuy must be mad that they cant be alive and know each other. like how when they was kids and Chuy was workin in Crystles familys farm and got stung by a wasp. I think Crystel's a female player bacause she has two boyfriend plus chuy if I weree him Id tell her shes cut already because thats messted up what if shes talkin to other boy ghost to well he was going to the raidors game wich they lost. Well I fannally finished the book and I think it could have been a little better becaue bot could have had more action, romance, horror, comedy, and feelings. If they showd more feelings then it would have been more better then i love you and i missed you.this book could have had alot of inprovements in it to make it more injoyable.

ReplyDeleteThe thing that kept me reading this book was the parts with Chuy and Crystal. To me, I think it shows the feeling and emotion that Gary Soto was trying to accomplish with this book. The Afterlife is one of my favorite books because it shows the meaning of life from the point of view of a dead person, which is something like I have never read before.

But one of my questions is why did Crystal do drugs? It makes no scence to me cause Chuy explains her to be a very pritty girl! I think she was stressed out or something that might be why she did drugs.

I am on page 134 where Chuy meeets the homless guy he saved but the man still died. He is now a ghost and his name is Robert Montgomery. Chuy and Robert go on a bus where they find Yellow Shoes too. Robert feels anger at the killer and makes trouble for him by possesing him and make him go crazy. Chuy goes to his uncle Eddie's apartment to find that the gun his mom gave him is gone. Chuy fears his uncle will shoot the wrong person who killed him. I don't think it is a good idea to get revenge because even if his uncle kills Yellow Shoes he will go to jail for killing a person. So his uncle should just catch the guy and give to the police to handle. It would be the right thing to do.

But for a while i thought that he was falling in love with rachel because before or not so long after he was dead he said that he was going hook with Rachel because he knew for a long (since he was little) .So really when i read that i was thinking that he aws going to fall in love with Rachel .But when i got to chapter 6 i realive that he not falling in love with Rachel he actually falling in love with Crystal . since they actually got o lot in common . Like he is a ghost so is she,but also that they both died so young and really i think that is really . But at the same time at least that he found some body to fall in love with.

I agree with Jonathan that the most thoughtful parts of the book was about Chuy and Crystal. Gary Soto/the author must of had an experence before with love like that. Not dead love, but passsionite, forever love like that. This book leaves me to think, what really is our afterlife. Is it a wounderful place, of peace and safty, or is it a place of hate and misfortune. You can answer that question yourself

But i think it's kind of cool that he can fly and he can see people but people cant see him :] . But my question is why did the guy with the yellow shoes get defended ? Was he having a bad day ? Did he hear something else and thought it was offensive ? I like this book so far and I hope the book answers my questions !!!!!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Crystal feels the same way about Chuy as he does about her. I think she does because on page 119 she remembers him when he picked grapes on her farm and she thought he was cute. Crystal seeems like she doesn't have ant trouble with share secrets with him. She probably wouldn't do that with anyone eles except her parents of course. On page 119 also Crystal kisses Chuy whicj shows she really does like him just the same way Chuy feels about her. Chuy ans Crystal can relate to each others problems and regrets that shows even more they like each other.

Trying to tell his homie that it's alright don't be mad and be unintelligent and try to found who his killer is if it was me well yeah I would said the same thing but then I would of tried of found the killer me bebcause it seems to me that he doesn't even no who his killer is but anyways I would of been really mad at the killer for taking my one life away from me and I would of been really scared to be dead because like your dead and still there still is more stuff to do in the world and many people to see so that would be sad for me. But I guess like Chuy said he could feel any madness about this so maybe i wouldn't eirther or maybe people are different maybe i'll feel something. Well anyways who would really know how it is really like when you're really dead unless they're really dead but still they got many other things to do and you only got one life maybe and there's maybe more things you can do when you're alive then when you're dead so no one should risk their life to see how death is like.
ReplyDeletethe other day I was watching an old movie on HBO called gost dad and it reminded me about the book the Afterlife well to give a summury about the movie it was about a family and the mother had died so all four of the kids lived with thier father the big sister had to fill in the place of the mother so one day the father gets off of work and goes on a taxi. The taxi driver throws the taxi with him and the father of that family down a bridge eventually the taxi was found but the father was with his family the only differance between him and chuy is that his family can only see him in the dark he can fly just like chuy he can also go threw things with a breeze at the end the father wasn't really dead he just flew his soul out of his body but it was really like the Afterlife. also just like the book the movie was good even though it was old if any of you guys ever see it or even if you already saw it tell me what your opinion is .

I also like that part because in most books the narratior is alredty dead. But i like how they give the infor mation and feeling on how if felt well he was dien. I also liked the part when chuy went to the rival football game. I like this book becausei disrides things so you can imagin that your there and feel the same way thatv they feel. it just aint like in the rest of the books that they say i was at the footbll game and the radiors lost they tell you how it felt and what the player was like. I wish i was reading this book its better then monster.
